Electrical problems in Whitebridge homes

Whitebridge runs from older brick homes along Dudley Road to newer houses on the estate streets. The older ones can still have a fuse board, and anything mounted outside cops the weather.

Electrician working inside an open switchboard

Fuse box with copper wire in it

The outdoor lights had failed. We found copper used in place of the lighting fuse wire, removed it and fitted the correct fuse wire, replaced the dead fitting, enclosed the bare terminations properly and flagged the tired board for replacement.

LED lighting in a bright kitchen

Two oyster lights broken up inside

The plastic in both round oyster fittings had gone brittle and broken away. We isolated the circuit, fitted new LED oysters, tested and issued a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) with before and after photos.

Lights and downlights >
A range hood with its light on above a coil cooktop

One cooktop element dead, range hood dark

At a rental we replaced a cracked bathroom power point the same visit, then found the cooktop was not worth repairing and the range hood housing had deteriorated. We quoted both so the owner could decide once.

What an electrician in Whitebridge finds in older homes

Power off, cable moved, circuit tested

New ceiling openings sat right where the lighting cable ran. We proved the circuit dead, cut and re-routed the cabling clear of them, then re-energised and tested it, rather than tucking it aside and hoping.

Fan you had to get up to control

We swapped a wall controlled fan for the owner's DC fan and light, removed the old wall control, changed the switch plate and mounted the remote holder on the wall.

Electrical work in Whitebridge: common questions

Someone put copper wire in my fuse box. Is that dangerous?

Yes, and we see it. At a Whitebridge property a piece of copper had been used in place of the lighting fuse wire, which means the fuse can no longer do its job. We removed it, fitted the correct fuse wire and checked the circuit.

Why do my round oyster lights keep breaking?

The plastic inside goes brittle with heat and age, then the cover cracks or the light flickers. In one Whitebridge unit we replaced two failed oyster fittings with LED oysters and tested the lighting circuit.

Some of my outdoor light wiring is left bare. Does that matter?

It does. At a Whitebridge property the terminations behind a failed outdoor light were open to the weather, so we enclosed them properly, tested the circuit and told the owner the board itself was due for replacement.

Can the wall speed controller go and a remote take over?

Yes. In Whitebridge we fitted the owner's DC fan and light, took the old wall control out, changed the switch plate over and mounted the remote holder where the control used to be.
