Electrical faults behind Cardiff brick and tile

Much of Cardiff is post-war brick and tile, often with an upstairs addition. The wiring is the part that never got updated.

Old rubber wiring feeding the upstairs lights

We disconnected the old rubber-covered cable, ran new cable to every upstairs light point, swapped three tired fans for fan and light units, and added a lounge pendant and two entry downlights.

Half the house dead, nobody could find why

Another electrician had switched off and unplugged everything with no answer. We tested the power circuit, found a faulty fresh water pump out the back, and left the rest of the house live.

Kitchen light out, no safety switch on the circuit

We replaced a hardwired kitchen downlight, two dead rear sensor spotlights and an old fan with a DC fan. The lighting circuit had a breaker only, with no safety switch (RCD) behind it.

Switchboards and pool power in Cardiff

A 25 amp main switch on much bigger mains

We checked the board, found 16mm2 mains running into a 25 A main switch, and replaced it with the correct 63 A one. A power point went inside the board at the same time.

A new pool with nowhere to plug anything in

At a Cardiff South home we fitted two weatherproof double outlets for the pool gear, a 15 A outlet for the heater and a switched outlet for the heater pump, then bonded the pool earth back to the house.

Electrical work in Cardiff: common questions

My Cardiff house has old rubber-covered wiring. Does it all have to go?

The circuits with the old rubber cable do. At one Cardiff home we disconnected the old rubber wiring feeding the upstairs lights and ran new cable to every light point, then left the rest of the house for a later stage.

Half my house has no power and the last electrician could not find the fault. What now?

We start again with everything unplugged and test circuit by circuit. At one Cardiff house the cause was a faulty fresh water pump out the back, so the pump went to the plumbers and the power stayed on.

Why is my main switch smaller than my mains cable?

It usually means the board was built before the mains were upgraded. At a Cardiff property the mains were 16mm2 with only a 25 A main switch, so we fitted the correct 63 A switch.

Can my bathroom exhaust fan be wired to come on with the light?

In most bathrooms it can, and we check that when we are there. At one Cardiff rental a mould inspection found the fan was not switched with the light and a second fan had stopped, so we supplied and replaced both fans.
