Electrical problems in the older Edgeworth streets

Edgeworth grew in stages, so the streets run from 1960s brick homes to new estate builds. The older ones were wired for one light and one power point per room.

A power point hanging from a wall on charred cable with the cavity behind it scorched black

Power point sparking out of the wall

The outlet had come away from the wall and was throwing sparks. We attended as an emergency, made it safe, fitted a new outlet, tested it and issued the compliance certificate.

One light in the middle of every room

We fitted 23 downlights, 18 of them in new positions, swapped 19 single outlets for doubles, added four more, fitted three fans, two TV points and hallway switching from three places.

Bathroom switch dead, fan that never worked

The switch had failed and the exhaust fan had never run. With the fitting off we found the bathroom lighting had been wired by someone not licensed, so we priced rewiring it properly instead of patching it.

Cooktops and renovations in Edgeworth

Cooktop elements going from low to boiling

Elements that swing between settings usually mean the control switches behind the knobs have failed. We test each element and the circuit feeding it, and check whether there is a safety switch before any new appliance goes on.

Cable where the new opening had to go

Two new ceiling openings landed straight on top of the lighting cable. We isolated the circuit, moved the cable clear, refitted the light point, and put in two double power points while the roof space was open anyway.

Electrical work in Edgeworth: common questions

Is a sparking power point an emergency?

Yes. Stop using it, switch it off at the board if you can do that safely, and ring 0400 232 172, including after hours. At one Edgeworth home an outlet had pulled away from the wall and was sparking, so we made it safe, replaced it and tested the new one.

Can you put downlights through a whole house at once?

Yes. In one Edgeworth home we fitted 23 downlights, 18 of them in new positions, because most rooms had a single light in the middle of the ceiling.

Can you tell if electrical work was done by someone unlicensed?

Often yes, once the fitting comes off the wall. At an Edgeworth rental the bathroom lighting had been wired by someone not licensed, so we priced rewiring it properly rather than patching it.

Do you get a certificate for electrical work at my house?

Yes. We issue a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) for the work we do, and you get a copy.

Can one hallway light be switched from three places?

Yes. In an Edgeworth home we wired the hall light to switch from three separate points, so nobody has to walk the length of the hallway in the dark to turn it off.
