Signs it's time to rewire an old house

Electrician working inside a switchboard

Power trips and nobody knows why

Old cable breaks down inside steel conduit. We trace it and replace it.

Crumbling rubber wiring

Old rubber (VIR) cable goes brittle. Once the insulation cracks, it is a shock and fire risk.

Fuses and no safety switches

An old fuse board usually means old cable too. We can fix both in one go.

Lights that flicker or buzz

Worn connections behind old switches. New cable and fittings put it right.

From our job sheets

A whole house off rubber cable

In New Lambton we removed the old VIR rubber cabling and steel conduit and rewired the home.

Cotton cable still in the roof

A laundry power point was still wired in old cotton-covered cable. We rewired it with modern cable and checked the rest of the roof space.

Power circuits first

At one home we rewired the two power circuits, pulled out the old VIR cable and metal conduit, then tested and certified.

Found on a routine job

Replacing a stove in Waratah, we found the lighting circuit on old VIR cable and flagged it as a safety hazard.

House rewire questions

What does rewiring cost in Newcastle?

It depends on the size of the home, roof and underfloor access, and how many circuits you have. We look at the house, then give you a fixed price in writing.

How do I know if my house has VIR rubber wiring?

Many older homes still have it: black rubber-coated cable, often in steel conduit, that goes brittle with age. We can test it and show you.

Can you rewire a house in stages?

Yes. We can rewire the power circuits first and the lighting later, so you can spread the cost.

Does a rewire include a new switchboard?

Not always, but they often go together. If your board still has ceramic fuses, we price both so you can decide.
